Golf Carts Yield to Pedestrians??
On Wednesday May 25th, 2005 Camp Arnes had their annual golf tournament at Larters at St. Andrew's. It is a very proper golf and country club. I had to wear a collared tank top even. I found out that there is indeed a proper way to drive a golf cart around the 6000 yards of golf course: You are expected to yeild to golfers who are walking the course instead of driving it. As well, as you apporach a new hole, if there are any golfers waiting to T off, you stop your golf cart and wait for the golfer to T off before continuing past the hole. It was an educational experience :) The golf tournament could not have gone any better, and I even have the sunburn to prove it too! We had 101 golfers out of a possible 140, so it wasn't too bad of a turn out. This weekend, camp has a ladies retreat happening here. It is my weekend off, but I decided that the two hosts for the weekend (matt and debbie) may need more assistance than just the 2 of them can do by themselves, so i am on call for the weekend just in case something goes terribly wrong. As well, tomorrow I have a hair appointment booked. Do I dare do anything crazy right before family pics for my sister's high school grad in 2 weeks. hmmmm something for me to ponder over the next 24 hours!
Where in England are You From?
That is the question that I was asked last night, and it wasn't something I was expecting to be asked at all. A guy from New Zealand who works for the camp asked me that last night. I said I had only spent a short amount of time there, but I was "from" Luton. He said that every now and then, some of my words sound very English and he had just assumed that I had been born there and moved to Canada at an early age. I laughed, but thanked him for the compliment. He then asked me where else I had lived, so I told him I had lived in Caronport, near Los Angeles, Regina, Winnipeg, and Luton. He asked me which one of these was home to me. I said that technically home was Caronport because of family, but Luton was home in my heart. On a further note to that though, I added; really though, home is where God has put you and you need to be content and happy to where you are at the moment. So, God knows where my heart is, but I am still happy where he has put me for the time being. If he sends me back to England that is fantastic, and if he doesn't, then obviously I'll be making my home somewhere else. It was a really neat conversation. Last night after dinner, a bunch of us had a Red Dwarf Marathon. It almost made me cry because it reminded me of watching it with people at 24. However, i nearly died from laughter and what made it even funnier was that people were laughing at me because they themselves didn't know what was so funny. I love British comedy. We watched all of series 3 and 4 yesterday and most of us have today and tomorrow off as well, so we may continue with the Red Dwarf Marathon. Wednesday is golf tournament day. Please keep me and others who are helping to run the thing in your prayers this week. Please pray for nice weather too. There has been flash flood warnings the last few days because wwe have had so much rain here....honestly, i thought England had been bad for rain, but this is so much worse. I'll write again soon. I am looking forward to having my monday off because it is Victoria Day...we have you British to thank for that one! Cheers!!
Bring it On!
No, it is not about the movie. My staff (still feel very strange saying that) and I have had a really good bonding time playing beach volleyball most evenings after dinner. It's been the first real test of physical endurance i have had to put on my knees since when i believe God healed them back in October. My knees have never felt so good! We normally play for 2 hours, and the competition gets intense....especially if you get paired up with only one other person (insert wink) and have to play against a team of 4. It's okay, Matt and I dominated the sand pit! It's a national holiday here in Canada on Monday, so i get a long weekend. For the most part, there will be plenty of staff around for the weekend, so we are planning yet another massive volleyball game for tonight. However, several key people that i hang around with here, are going to be gone. It should be an interesting weekend.
My week overall here has been great. Things with the golf tournament are really coming together for wednesday. My part in it all is over until the morning of it. We leave camp for the golf course at 6:30 am (insert yuck here). I am so looking forward to it though! I am going to be calling it my first sun burn day as opposed to a tanning day.
Tonight before volleyball, a bunch of us are taking a 30 minute walk to go to the roadside hang out for burgers and onion rings. I think it will be a lot of fun, plus i get to play some pool hopefully. On monday, i am driving up to Hecla Island for the day. Some of us are going on a pic nic and i think it will be a ton of fun. I love little day road trips.
Hope everyone is doing well. I'll try to update a little more regularly than once a week.
Back to Uni (it was only for a week)
Well, I survived my uni course. We had some very intelligent people in my class, and then we had some not so intelligent people in my class, but they just liked to think they were. It was the first time that my department had opened up a class in it to students from other departments who needed electives to fill. I think that was the big mistake of it all. Some of them had no clue whatsoever about sport and its issues, but they completely thought they did. Somewhat frustrating when you're suppose to be having a group discussion. As well, it was a lot of work for doing a modular in only a week: 2 small papers, 1 term paper, 1 oral presentation and a big oral final exam. These things went okay, but they caused a lot of stress during the week. I just completed my oral final and i got an 80%....i'll take that. For a sport management class, it really wasn't too managementish. It should have been called sport policy and governance or something like that. However, the teacher was amazing and I did learn a lot. I'm looking forward to having him as a professor again in the fall. I am really looking forward to going back up to camp tomorrow evening. I am looking forward to going shopping with my aunt this evening and having some relax time tonight and tomorrow before i drive back up to camp in the evening after dinner. I know from here on in, it's going to get super busy for me, I do know that it is going to be a huge challenge and at times stressful. I'm trusting in Jesus to keep me healty and feeling what i deem as normal so that i can function at full tilt. Well, the shopping centre is calling my name....even if i can't spend any money. I'll keep you all updated on things as i go along. Have a great weekend people!
Weekend at Camp
My first 5 days on the job have been great! I'm making friends and really settling into my new "home" and the way of life here really well so far. However, it is a weekend away for most of the pre-exsisting staff. That means except for me and maybe 2 other people, we are the only ones left around here. Thankfully, one of two people lives around here all year long and decided not to leave for the weekend. This person, also thankfully let us watch movies at her house and she is cooking for us tomorrow after church (she happens to also be one of the camp cooks). Church tomorrow is in the town of Gimli (20 minutes from camp), and its a cute little town of 3500 people. During the summer though, the town almost becomes 20,000 people due to the fact that it is a beach resort town. It should be interesting to see how a town adapts to that many people. Monday is the start of my module back at U of M. I'm getting excited for it, but a little nervous to see all the people I haven't seen in over a year. I know it will be alright, but part of me is wondering at the same time. I know I'm not the same, and maybe they aren't either. Please pray for me in this coming week. Here in Canada, Sunday is also Mother's Day. Just wanted to say that I love and appreciate my mother BIG time!!! Hope everyone is doing well. For those of you who went on C.U. weekend away, I hope you had a blast!
Here There and Everywhere!
I have had a hand in doing all sort of stuff today. This morning I did my basic admin office stuff and made some phone calls to people. This afternoon was the fun stuff! I got to observe several different skill sets: Archery, Wall Climbing, and Fire and Bannock making. It was definately an experience! However, people have taken really well to me in leadership; despite the fact that they at first laugh at me for having no camp experience at all and here I am being an assistant director. We have a very muticultural staff: we have people working here at the camp from all across Canada, India and New Zealand (the accent is great!). We have bonded really well, and I know the Lord is going to do amazing things. Well, it is hayrides and beach volleyball tonight, so i must be going.
From the Office
Hello to all from the official office of mine! I have had a terrific first day here at camp and I am really looking forward to getting to know the camp layout and all the staff a lot better. So far, everyone has been super welcoming and have accepted me into my role with no problems. I toured the whole camp today and all I have left to see is the horse corrals after dinner. I have internet in my office, so I'll be able to update you people regularly. I know this is short, but I think I'm done in the office for the day. I'll post after i've had a full day of "proper" work!
